Dr. Franz Stoedtner (1870-1944) - Egypt
The art historian Franz Stoedtner was one of the most important pioneers of documentary photography. In 1895, he founded one of the first commercial photographic distributors with scientific educational objective called the "Institut für wissenschaftliche Projection” /Institute for scientific projection" in Berlin. Stödtner was a pupil of Herman Grimm, professor of Art History at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin, who was the first to use slides in his courses.
The central focus of his pictures and collections is the "scientific purpose of photography", which resulted in high demands on photographic techniques and the quality of documentaries. In addition, the systematic compilation and provision of his picture series for research and education was groundbreaking. In addition to the art-historical pictures, there are series about the cultural history and Ethnology, the history of technology and natural sciences, and many other subject areas.
