Woodblock-printed book with beautiful drawings and sketches - From the W.M. Rossetti collection - Japan - Mid to late 19th century
Beautiful book with numerous drawings, engravings and sketches of sword guards, birds, people, trees etc (some on crepe)
On the cover there is written: "W.M. Rossetti, 1898". This manuscript/scrapbook is made by William Michael (1829-1919), a British writer and art critic and co-founder of the Pre Raphaëlites (and brother of Dante Gabriel Rossetti).
Rosetti and his brother bought some of these drawings, etchings and sketches in various shops in Paris. But given the date on the cover this collection was complete by the year 1898.
The book has more than a hundred different images.
Dimensions: 32cm x 19 cm
Condition: This book shows the obvious traces of use (bumped corners) but is complete and, considering its age, in a good condition. Covers are loose.
W.M. Rossetti, Dante Gabriel's brother, writes in his diary:
"Went to Dessoye's, the Japanese shop in the Rue de Rivoli, and bought books etc.
to the amount of 40 francs. They are cheaper here than in the Lepelletier.
There is to be a new consignment in October, especially of books of birds and flowers . .." (June 18, 1864)
Just a month later, on 24 June 1865, W.M. Rossetti visited the Japanese shop at 7 Boulevard des Capucines in Paris on his way home from Italy and bought "a fair number of the small engravings on crape. "
