A handkerchief with the map of Italy decorated with the coat of arms of 88 cities, both from Italy and the Balkans. It commemorates the Armistice of Villa Giusti that ended the conflict between Italy and Austria at the end of World War I. It shows the regions that Italians expected to regain as part of the “unredeemed Italy” cause (the re-annexation of Italian-speaking regions). In the secret "Treaty of London" of 1915, the Triple Entente (Britain, France and Russia) made many promises to persuade Italy to join them against Germany and Austria. However, the war ended with an armistice rather than a true victory, and the United States (who did not sign the Treaty of London) preferred a unified Yugoslavia, so Italy only recovered half of what they had been promised.
The handkerchief has a missing piece in the upper right corner (around Venice) and was formerly restored with an emergency patch.
