Miocene 20 million years old Indonesia
Hello, I offer a batch of 3 very nice slices of fossil wood from Indonesia of very good thick quality, between 110 cm in diameter and a length of about 90 cm.
Description of the fossil wood:
Petrified wood over 20 million year old and dating from the end of the Tertiary (Miocene) from a thick rain forest, composed of Dipterocarpus (Magnolia family) and palms, covering the volcano chain in Indonesia that runs from Sumatra to Bali, and up to West Java. Periodically, the volcanoes came into activity. The force of the eruption has been so strong that it has uprooted the surrounding forests. The ejected ashes covered them with a thick burning layer...
The nearest trees were consumed, those who were not sufficiently buried have rotted. But those located between these two extremes benefited from ideal conditions. They have been naturally sterilised by heat, destroying the microbes responsible for the rotting process.
The silica contained in volcanic ashes, is dissolved in the percolating water. It has slowly replaced the wood, molecule by molecule, by minerals such as quartz, chalcedony, or jasper, thus preserving the shape of the tree and even of its cells. Petrified trees are sometimes found in the water streams, but the finest pieces are buried several metres deep.
Fossil wood is petrified, which means that it has been turned into stone over time. Trapped in layers of sediment, the wood has been deprived of oxygen, and over the years the water that was contained in the sediments has filled the wood with minerals.
