An international sculpture exhibition was organised for the first time in the 20-hectare park Middelheim in Antwerp in 1950. The council decided as suggested by the mayor Lode Craeybeckx to make it a permanent open-air museum of sculpture. This poster was released in three languages (Dutch, French, English) and is the first and most rare in a series: a poster was released for each biennial and made by leading artists such as Paul Ibou, Herbert Binneweg, Piet Serneels en Rob Buytaert.
The internationally renowned sculpture biennials were organized every two years in the summer months from 1951 onwards. They took place on the grounds of Middelheim-Laag, opposite Middelheimpark.
The 20th biennial ended the series in 1989.
