Ciske de Rat is a 1984 Dutch film, based on the books ' Ciske de Rat ' and ' Ciske groeit op ' from the Ciske trilogy by Piet Bakker. The book was made into a film in 1955 and a musical in 2007, in which the whole trilogy is told.

The story is set in the mid 1930s Ciske is a street urchin who has little parental love. His father is a sailor and is almost always off, and Ciske has to live with his mother, who wants nothing to do with him. Ciske is expelled time and time again from school, but then comes upon a new school master Bruis in the classroom. He wins Ciske’s trust and Ciske likes him in class. But then something terrible happens. When his mother destroys a gift from Ciske’s only friend Dorus, who just died, he grabs a knife in a fit of rage and stabs her. Ciskes mother dies and Ciske has to go to the reform school, where he must to survive amongst many older guys ...
