Käthe Kollwitz (1867 - 1945) was a German artist, sculptor, and engraver whose work is amongst the most representative of the 20th century.
Käthe Kollwitz believed art must depict the social conditions of the proletariat. She was involved in the attempt to build a union of workers fighting against national-socialism and in June 1932, she was co-signatory of a call for unity of action between the socialists and communists.
When the Nazis came to power in 1933, she was forced to resign from her post at the Prussian academy of arts and her job as a director of the graphics class. Her honour for merit in the field of Arts and Letters was also withdrawn. She was forbidden from exhibiting her work.
