Suggestive male portrait depicting a “Religious Patriarch”. The canvas was relined and put on a new stretcher in 1868. It was purchased at an auction in France around 1950. Wood’s light exam showed restoration on the forehead and beard of the subject as well as several layers of paint. Conservative restoration is recommend.
Behind the frame is an old title block written in French, which reads:
lot. n. 63. Huile sur toile
Govert Flinck 1615 - 1660 ( atelier )
"Patriarche religieux" - XVII siécle
This title block was probably added by the auction house.
Work from a private collection, with certification in accordance with art. 64 D.L. 22nd January 2004, no. 42 Code of Cultural Heritage (Italy)
