Condition: in a beautiful half-leather binding with letter piece and beautiful spine decoration. Piece missing from the title page/title engraving. Plates and maps sometimes worn or torn in the fold. Some light moisture spots, in the margin of the plates, but mostly in good condition. With 8 engraved plates and 1 map; including engraved map of Zeeland with the flooded part hand-coloured, Gezigt van de Nieuwe Haven etc. (Vlissingen), Gezigt naar de Kerkstraat etc. (Vlissingen), Gezigt naar de Wijnbergsche Kaai etc. (Vlissingen), Gezigt van de Palingstraat (Vlissingen), Gezigt over het Molenwater, Gezigt van den inbraak der zeedijk (Kruiningen), Ondervloeijen van het dorp (Kruiningen), Digtmaken van den dijk (Kruiningen). Decorative, rare and complete with the usually missing map of Zeeland.
¶ Large floods between 1682 and 1953 were the floods of 14/15 January 1808 and 12 March 1906. But in this period, no permanently flooded land was created. The disaster of 1808 resulted in a general improvement of the dikes. This was achieved thanks to the new possibilities offered by the centralised, French-style governance.
The flood of 1808 is also included in the canon of Vlissingen.
