Five volumes with luxury binding in red cloth with embossed golden letters. Comprising 3 volumes of text (850pp) with 345 half-tone photographs and 59 plans, a fourth volume with 175 b/w or coloured plates and a fifth volumen as a portfolio that contains 96 unbound numbered maps. The whole set is contained in a tied folding paperboard portfolio with archaeological reproduction in wood.
First Chinese translation of Stein's most famous work, published in 1921. Stein provides a richly illustrated account of his second Central Asian expedition in 1906-8, in which he crossed into Chinese Turkestan and excavated a number of archaeological sites along the Silk Road, discovered what appeared to be an extension of the Great Wall and "located the famous Jade Gate, the historic frontier post on the Silk Road" (Howgego). Most notably he gained access to the Mogao Caves, also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas. Perhaps the most fruitful archaeological expedition that has been undertaken in XXth century.
Monumental work of 43 cm high and 26 kg weight. profusely illustrated.
